I Used to Work at a Half-Way House

I used to work at a half-way house.

While working there, I noticed a young guy that would watch me all the time. I could feel him staring at me when I would talk to other young men. We spoke every now and again, but never about anything “deep” or really spiritual.

One Saturday morning, about a year after I had stopped working there, I got a phone call.

It was him.

After catching up for about 20 minutes, he said to me “Donte. I’m scared. I’m scared that I’m going to end up in the same place I was”. Then he asked me to pray for him.

I was shocked!

The crazy thing about this was that while we were at the halfway house, I didn’t think we made much of a connection, and I really didn’t think that I said anything that would impact him.

Through this, I learned that though we didn’t talk much, it was my actions that spoke to him.

There are times where we don’t have the opportunity to communicate with people around us the way that we want to, especially when it comes to sharing our faith.

However, it’s not always about the words we speak, but sometimes, it’s our actions that speak loudly to others.

When we choose to live out our faith through our actions, we can impact people with God’s love, and give them hope without saying a word.

1 John 3:18 - “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” (NLT)

Prayer: Lord, I pray that I can love the people around me by actively showing them Your love. I look to you to give me the grace and strength to live out my faith. In Jesus name, Amen.
